Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones
Medicine heals. And Laughter heals. Therefore, laughter is medicine. The children down here are so sad, for so much of their lives. That makes me sad, but praise God, they usually laugh when they’re around me. I try to make them laugh, and even sometimes, unintentionally they still think I’m funny, even when I am not joking. But that’s ok. It’s great!
Over the past 33 years I get criticized A LOT for my ministry style, specifically for my sense of humor. When we get truly saved, we become ministers of the Gospel, whether we know it or not. Not all are called to be teachers, but we are all ministers. Priests even! No seminary needed. I didn’t get ordained by Chuck Smith, Calvary Chapel, until years afterwards. But I had the honor of leading a lot of people to the Lord until then.
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Religious people have said that I am reckless with the Gospel, and I don’t take it seriously. Yet they’re comfortably living in the states as they said it. Lots of them aren’t even walking with the Lord now. But yet here I am, still serving Jesus and walking with Him. I left everything for the Gospel.
I have sacrificed it all. My family, friends and career. I came down here to be in the mission field. No complaints! I am joyfully sharing the Good News Of Jesus Christ with the ‘whomsoevers,’ and smothering them with prayer and love (hopefully for the rest of my life here in Nicaragua). The only time I am unhappy is when I am not joyfully serving others with the Love of Jesus. That almost always includes laughter (medicine). A merry heart is medicine.

I get my bones dried out by one out of ten ‘born again christians’ I run into. If I see someone wearing a cross, I rejoice and assume they’re born again, until they suck the juice out of my bones. I’m used to grumpy heathens. They’re going to hell. I love them and feel for them. I only block on fb those fake, mean spirited ‘christians’.

I get called clown, jester, and a lot of other negative things because I love to see the ‘funny’ in every thing that I can (unless it’s a tragedy. There’s a lot of that down here as well). If I can help people to at least smile, I see hope. And that helps me to overcome my own trauma, stress and sadness.
Nicaraguans are serious. They’ve been through a lot. Laughter makes them merry. Merry hearts are like medicine as I said. Jokes, bad Spanglish, bad dancing, pranks and awkwardness make people laugh around me, and I love it. Even if they’re laughing at me, I love it. Life down here for a week long mission trip is fun. A couple of weeks later though, after the ‘national geographic’ phase wears off, things get real bleak, real fast. Merry hearts are healing hearts. Medicine (normal medicine) is good as well. The wisest man in the world, Solomon said so, through the Lord. Take your medicine!
Ecclesiasticus 38:4 The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth; and he that is wise will not abhor them.
But there’s another medicine that is even stronger than any other medicine out there. The Word of God is medicine. Medicine is designed to make us healthy. To revive us and to help us to recover. To take away pain and infection. The thing with medicine though is that you have to follow its instructions. I’m the type that takes one penicillin pill and forgets to take the other 14 penicillin pills that are in the instructions. The infection goes away when I take a pill. Then I go on happily for a couple days, and the infection comes back with a vengeance. Often worse than before. You have to take your medicine daily, and follow the instructions. You have to digest it. David said he meditated (chewed) on the Word of God. He spoke the Word of God out loud, to himself. Medicine doesn’t work if you speed take (or speed read) it. You have to digest it.
Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in His law doth he meditate day and night.
The best medicine we can take to stay healthy (spiritually and physically) is the Word of God. At PureHeartSchool our children get the Word of God daily. The Word of God is daily medicine for your health! Take with water (Jesus is the water of life!)
John 4:14 “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life”
