 Galatians 4:7
New International Version
So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

In Paul’s time, there were real slaves.  Let’s briefly look at this verse at face value, literally, out of context.  I think Paul may have been thinking of real slaves when he was writing this.  Slaves that Jesus saved. Although they were still in bondage physically, they were now free in Christ.

The mental image of slavery, the chains, auctions, cruel masters, whips, etc. seems antiquated, but in this day and age there are still slaves.  Slavery, however, has many forms.  Child slavery is alive all over the world.  In Asia, Northern Africa and theMiddle East, worker slavery still exists.  With that being said, it is better to be a slave to man than a slave to sin.

Slavery exists in another form.  Sin.  In this verse, Paul is also talking about slavery to sin.  I knew a drug addict once.  He worked for me washing cars at a car dealership.  He hated his addiction and hated everyone around him.  I asked him to do something for me once and his response was ‘I ain’t a slave’.  I remember thinking, ‘Uh, yes you are. You are a slave to crack’.

When I was a newly installed Calvary Chapel Sr. Pastor, I had a good friend, Roger Wing.  I told him that I had to do something.  He said, ‘No, you get to do something, you don’t have to do anything’.  I remembered that.  If I had to do something I was looking at things as a slave would.  If I got to do something, I was looking at things as a prince would; serving his loving Father.  What a privilege!  I love being a servant to God, my Father.  I hate being a slave to sin.

The part that I love about ministry is serving others.  I thoroughly enjoy catering to everyone and anyone.  We try to teach this lesson to the kids on a daily basis.  We feel it’s best to teach by example.  We do that by serving others.  I love serving!

We are called to serve freely and good-naturedly.  To give happily.  To serve others as we would serve God, Himself.  That means, going over the top!

You are not a slave if you love your master.  If you love someone, you want to serve them hand and foot.  Christians are sons of God.  We love our Father because He adopted us.  We show that love, by serving others.

 Matthew 20:28
New International Version
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…

We are called to serve not to be served.  One sign of a true conversion is that theperson is given a servant’s heart.  We enjoy making other people happy.  We loveserving others and giving to them because we know it pleases God, and because we actually love others.  We have been given the mind of Christ.

To serve others humbles you.  You have to humble yourself before you can serve others as well. To serve others as Jesus wants you to, you have to truly love them.

I think the key is to not forget where you came from!

 Deuteronomy 6:12
New International Version
Be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Don’t forget your slavery!  If you do, you won’t appreciate your freedom.

I have told this story before, but it bares repeating.

This king adopted a poor beggar boy.  They took off his poor beggar clothes and dressed him as a prince.  Every morning the adopted prince was seen, dressed in his ‘beggar clothes’ standing in front of the mirror crying.  When brought to the kind king’s attention, he asked his adopted son,’Why do you do that?’  The Ex beggar boy/now adopted prince replied, ‘Because I never want to forget what the King has done for me.’

The difference between a slave and a servant is that the slave ‘has to’, the servant ‘wants to’.

Estamos llamados a servir libremente y buen humor.

He contado esta historia antes,
