Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
I AM (written in Hebrew is YHWH, a word so holy it is written without vowels so that mere humans can’t pronounce it) I AM, YHWH, is God’s holy name, not some filthy cuss word, but a description of God.
The third of The Ten Commandments states, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7)
God told Moses that His name was I AM and to tell the people I AM sent you. I AM is a description.
God is in the present. I AM infers in the right now. God is here, in this moment. I see Him in my mind as a present force, in the moment, and He kind of looks like a flame (in my mind’s eye). Before I got saved, I had a picture of God in my mind. He was an old bald man with a long white beard on and a light blue robe. That mental picture changed the moment I was born again.
God is not an old man. He is timeless. He doesn’t age or change. I don’t know for sure what He looks like. I have never seen Him, and I have never heard His voice. But I do know that He is here, in the moment, and He loves me and guides me.
The best way to please God, I believe, is to have a ‘do it now’ mentality when it comes to your relationship with Him. It shows your faith, which without it, is impossible to please God. In my way of thinking, it honors Him. When He shows you to do something (in my case, always Right Now), I just do it. Whether giving money, asking for forgiveness, passing a tract, talking to someone, or go someplace, I just do it. It saves me so much grief. All my heart ache in my life has come from not doing what God showed me to do, as soon as He showed me to do it. Every song thing
Moses talked to the burning bush, (which was God) and the Lord asked Moses what he had in his hand.
Exodus 4:2 And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod.
God didn’t want to hear about Moses’s past. He didn’t care about what Moses’ future plans were. And interestingly enough, He already knew what Moses had in his hand, right then, in that moment. But God wanted to hear Moses say, I just have a stick that I am using as a cane cause I’m an d man. And God implied basically, ‘use whatever you have in your hand and use it to obey me. (Jobs, your children’s diapers, Carreras, training) by obeying Me. In this case it was throwing it throwing it down’ (Moses was 80, he might have needed the rod to keep his balance, he might have been worried about throwing it down and loose his balance. A stripper that gets saved might have to quit her job etc). When you obey God it can get scary. Moses could have rolled down the hill. The stripper might end up homeless. Obeying God Right Now is a surprise a minute. In this case Moses was afraid of snakes probably so the serpent turned into a snake.
Exodus 4:3 And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it.
He didn’t tell Moses to think about it. To pray about it. To contemplate it. To analyze it. Not to even drop it. He said ‘throw it down’. And that’s what Moses did, and he didn’t like what he saw.
Lot’s of times when we act of what we feel God wants us to do, it’s not pretty right away. It doesn’t make sense. There’s no immediate sense of gratification. It might even be downright ugly. Kind of like the mission field. So many wonderful missionaries come down with great ideas, that no doubt were from God. But after 1-2 years they either return to the states, or just stay down here, sheltering in place. They obeyed God, it was tough, and the results weren’t immediate so they gave up on what God told them to do. They failed because they didn’t do the next thing God showed them to do.
Then God told Moses to pick the snake up by the tail, Right Now! Good thing Moses didn’t take the time to google ‘how to pick up a snake’, text his pastor and ask him if it was a good idea, or other time insuring things. He just did what I do when I am doing something scary that I think that God is showing me to do. I just take a deep breath and do it. That’s what Moses did. He just squatted down and grabbed the tail. Probably fully expecting to get bit. But God told Him to do it so he did it. We are not called to understand, figure it out or even to survive. We are only called to have faith, to trust God and to obey Him, Right Now!
Exodus 4:4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand:
God used Moses because Moses did what God told him to do, when God told him to do it. Sure Moses blew it, a lot, and struggled, but he always did what God told him to do.
Moses, and all other great men of God knew that when God told them to do something, it was to do it right now, with a sense of urgency. If you believe in Jesus He is your priority. We are His servants. It’s an honor to please Him. God told us to take care of kids. Not in the past. Not someday in the future. Right now. We don’t know we have a future. Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today. Obey God as well as you can, and as fast as you can.
James 4:13-17
New King James Version
Do Not Boast About Tomorrow
13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow [a]we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; 14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. 15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” 16 But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.
17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.
