Sean Park is the founder of TV One Life and a wonderful short term international mission’s group out of North Carolina called Maximum Missions, www.maximummissions.com. Also, Shawn is writer/composer of the drama titled ‘The Kingdom.” He brought a fantastic team to Nicaragua this week and this is what he told me. (paraphrased)
“I was a youth leader of a denominational church. I kind of dreaded “Missions Sunday” because missionaries would come and complain how hard everything was, and try to make us feel bad for living in the states. Then two of my youth went on a short term mission trip, they came back in a completely different way! Their lives were changed. I was so impressed that I went with them on the next mission’s trip. Now I have made it my life’s goal to help anyone who wants to go. It is amazing how short term missions will change your life.”
The wise men were religious and well read. They knew that Jesus, the Savior of theWorld, the Messiah was coming. They had a plan. But when they actually met Jesus, their plans changed. Their lives were changed forever.
They say the definition of insanity is to keep doing things the same way and expect different results. Christians tend to stagnate. They go to the same church every Sunday, listen to the same pastor, sit in the same pew, say the same prayers, read the same ‘BIBLE THROUGH IN A YEAR’ program, have the same friends and as a result they exclude a lot of people. However, they keep expecting God to do something new in their lives.
All the good (godly) things in my life happened when I did something I didn’t particularly want to do. When I finally stepped out of my comfort zone, things happened! I am forever grateful to the Lord for what I saw and was able to do when He pushed me out of my nest.
When I was a pastor of a large denominational church down here in Nicaragua, I always cringed when short term teams came down. I loved the short term team members, but some of their leaders would get upset with the way I did things. As a result, because I was in a denomination, I would get into trouble with the church politics. Although I clashed with the politics and religiosity of some of the leaders, I always loved the team members. The members themselves were kind, enthusiastic, well meaning, inexperienced novices. Some weren’t even Christians. They impacted all of us!
Many short term missionaries are among my best friends to this day. When you think of short term missionaries, you think of kids. However you would be surprised to know many were middle aged, or senior citizens. All ages bring something to the table.
When you go on short term missions for the first time, you are rejuvenated. As a rule, you are drinking a lot more water and walking a lot more. You breathe in fresh air and as a rule eat a better diet. I love it when a first time, short-term, missionary discovers Jesus. The kids, the older people, the novices, when they really see Jesus for the first time, they are changed forever. They see Him through their service to the ‘least of these’. They feel His anguish when they see the needs of 3rd world countries. They pray more.
I got to see Jesus afresh this week though the eyes of the short term missionaries of Maximum Missions. What a joy it always is.
Oh, by the way, I was really tired last Sunday, and had a lot of great excuses to not go to church. I went anyway, although it was outside of my comfort zone. There I met for the first time Sean Park and his team from Maximum Missions. Funny, how when I don’t want to do something, and I do it anyway, I get blessed. Not only me, but all of the kids got blessed enormously as well.
I want to encourage anyone and everyone to try short term missions. If you don’t have a passport you should really invest the 60 bucks and get one. You are welcome, irregardless of where you are at spiritually, as long as you are safe around women and kids, willing to work with us and follow our easy rules. If you don’t have any money to do so, just get to Managua. Spirit air has flights round trip for around $190.
Once you get here, stay with us for free! (We feed a couple hundred people a day, a few more isn’t going to break us.)
