Memories

video of the Jim Winner Home (we got grass!)

57 years of memories. Some good. Some bad. However the memories are only of how other people made me feel. or how I mad others feel. Bullies, deaths, combat, babies, love, betrayals etc leave trillions of memories caused by people.

I remember when my little baby girl came up to me when she was three. She had put on her own lipstick, and eye make up. She had a shiny Crown, and huge jangling earings (from a princess kit or something). Quite frightening actually. I almost said something unkind, but the Holy Spirit stopped me, I am sure of it. That was when I started my famous (notorious?) whistle of admiration and an exagerated OOOOLALAAAAA, right at at that moment in time. Baby Winnie Joy was trying to be pretty for Daddy. It was a critical moment in Winnie´s life. and in our relationship. I could have either edified her, or destroyed her, with one little word or glance. One instant had life long effects. I chose to build her up. I helped her to feel beautiful. I thank and praise God every day that I chose to edify, and that He checked my negativism while there was still time.

My best memory is when I saw my grandpa right before he died of a sudden heart attack. I was 4. He told me to come with him alone, behind the house. He hugged me and prayed for me in Slovak (I think). It was under an apple tree. His whiskers scratched my cheek and he was squeezing the air out of me. I smelt old man, rotten apples, apple blossoms and air pollution. All I felt was love. Real unadulterated love. God´s love. To this very day, whenever I smell those things, I feel the love of my granpa, and the Love of God. All the defeats, losses, friendships, goals, achievements, church services, preaching, smiles, kisses, parties, gifts, vacations and events disappear into the fog of time. Memories of feelings caused by others are etched in stone.

People do the most evil things in the name of God and country. There is no faith nor country that is exempt. Very strange. How can someone come to know and accept the true & living God if we who believe in Him make unbelievers feel bad by the things we say? God’s Spirit convicts, all we can do is argue. “Love the sinner, hate the sin” seems to have become just another of the billion “warm and fuzzy” cliches. “Speaking the truth in love” is the worst sort of blasphemy if there is no real love there. Jesus talked about trying to remove the mote from your neighbor’s while we have a beam in our own eyes. We have to be really aware of how we make others feel, when we are just as guilty. How the unbeliever remembers us is by how we made them feel. Usually, that is how they see God.

Moses was a great example. He did lots of bad things. However, the only thing that kept him from entering into the promised land was that he misrepresented God one time. When God asked him to “speak to the rock” to give water to the Israelites, Moses, out of frustration, HIT the rock with his rod. He didn’t show God in the right light. He was supposed to ASK the Rock and the Rock was going to grant the request. He chose to hit it, showing indignation ,even though God was not angry. When we get angy about the sin of others, we should examine ourselves closely. Jesus called us to love one another, and to love.

That’s the beauty of God. His love is unconditional. Phil Yancey said to me once, “there is nothing you could do to make God love you more, nor less”. We as Christians, should be joyously loving on people. That will do more to help others on the way to knowing Jesus than by being ´irked´ all the time. Even the slowest people can smell our irritation, and it makes them feel bad. They can smell our love for them as well, which makes them feel good. Err on the side of love. Don ´t smite the Rock.

We provide for 80 kids a day. Plus we have a PreK and are buildling the Jim Winner Home. Not only do we try to provide for food, shelter and clothing, but lots of times we end up paying their emergency medical bills and medicine for them. Also we help their families financially, from time to time. There´s lots of stuff that can ´írk´ us! We can´t afford to let it though. We choose to love unconditionally. It would all be a total waste of time if we didn´t do it with love. All the kids we serve would know it and feel bad. They don´t need any more bad memories. If we don’t really love them and make them feel good about themselves, it is pointless. We want them to know that God loves them. We do that by exhibiting God´s love towards them.

BTW If you want to help these children go to www.whatistheloveofgod.com and click the big gold donate button. It is a great tax write off and 100% of the money goes to these poor kids. We accept credit cards and paypal online.
It´s easy to ask on the behalf of those who can not.
