I once met a guy on a plane who said he was getting a PHD in mathematics and his thesis was to defend why ‘one plus one equals two’. It was a two hour flight and he gleefully explained the minutia of his idea. I just sat there and listened. Probably with a glazed look on my face, I am sure.
That is kind of how I feel about Webster’s definition of the word ‘the’. Webster was brilliant, as was the Mathematics PhD candidate, as are many students and teachers of the Bible. There is a need I suppose somewhere for all this trivia and detailed knowledge, but it is often TMI. Biblical Knowledge in particular, isn’t worth anything if you can’t figure out a way to break it down to the intellectual level of a toddler.
I know many scholars who can’t hold a simple conversation. I know a mechanical engineer who does not know how to change the oil on his own car, while discussing at length the pros and cons of oil changes. I know countless theologians that completely have missed God during their lifelong search of Him. They can’t be even be nice to people.
The kids we minister to in the chureca can not figure out math. Most don’t know colors. Let alone lofty theological concepts.
Most of the kids in the dump can’t add, read nor discern colors. Pureheart Pre-k kids can, but the kids in the dump can’t. When you say to a kid in dump ‘grab the blue one’ they look at you you with a blank look on their face. When you say ‘grab the one that’s the color of a police car’ they know it’s blue, and to grab it. If you ask them ‘one plus one equals?’ they just look at you. But if I say ‘if i give you one peso, and then give you another peso, how many pesos do you now have?’. They’ll say two! then they go onto say, Where are the 2 pesos, can I have them??
Jesus spoke at a level everyone understood. Leave it up to us to complicate things. He said, ‘I am THE good shepherd.’ Meaning the Singular, THE one and only good shepherd. THE good shepherd gives His life for the sheep (us). THAT is really amazing. THAT IS GREAT NEWS! But we either read past it fast because we have read it so much, or take the scholarly approach and break it down to a soul sucking, almost a scientific level. Either way isn’t as effective as just reading it, thinking on it (I am opposed to speed reading the Bible as well) believing it, and then living it out.
How do we live this verse?
1. Recognizing (and teach the children) that Jesus IS the ONLY GOOD SHEPHERD. There IS ONLY ONE. Only He can guide you. You should follow ONLY HIM. He is the only one that can give us life, and everything we need to live life abundantly and eternally.
2. He is the only one who died for us, His sheep. He loves us so much that He sacrificed Himself willingly for us, to pay for our sins once and for all giving us eternal life in Him.
3. We ONLY are His sheep. (Those of us who trust in Him) We are blessed because He is OUR shepherd. He is not distracted trying to pastor all the animals of the world, He only wants to pastor the sheep, HIS sheep, which is us.
Jesus is THE good shepherd, and it behooves us to talk to Him as much as possible. It is in our best interests to be spending time with Him, thinking about Him always and obeying Him.
There are 2 THEs. The good pastor, or the bad pastor. The bad bastor comes with a lot of other THEs, but they are all THE bad pastor. The bad pastor, and the other THE’s in this world we need to stay away from. THE hireling, THE theif, THE ‘not so good’ shepherd (inferred), THE evil one etc etc. THE bad pastor wants to kill us. He wants to confuse us when we read simple messages like this by adding a lot of words to it. By adding a lot of WORK and SACRIFICE to our backs. He wants our cars and houses repossessed, so we are bad examples. So people won’t want what we ‘have’. He wants us to be unhappy. He wants our kids to be miserable. He wants us unvictorious, slaves to sin, cheap, stingy and greedy. He doesn’t want us to help the poor (which is a blast by the way if you never did it before). After that, eternal death. That is your future if you follow THE bad pastor.
Follow THE good one, much more convenient.
