Expectations (Spanish Below)
Acts 3:.4 And Peter, fastening his eyes upon (a crippled beggar) said, Look on us. 5 And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. 6 Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
In the early church pastors didn’t actually get start getting salaries until about 400 years after the crucifixion. Once they did, of course they figured out even more ways to make more money from their parishioners – and in the process became rich. One wealthy priest once said to another, ‘look! we can no longer say “silver and gold have we none”!’. His fellow priest said ‘neither can we “rise and walk”!’
This beggar in Acts 3 was expecting a few pennies from passerbys. Peter said ‘look at us’ and the guy looked! He was expecting half of a sandwich or some coins. But God (using Peter) had so much more for him. His expectations were right. He was going to receive something, from God however, not from man.
God is looking for his believers to be beggars of Him. He wants HIS people who look at Him with expectancy. The best thing we as Christians can teach our onlookers is how to be beggars of Him, not man. God wants us to look the Him with expectation. That could be a definition of praying in faith. Why pray if you really aren’t expecting something from God? Even when you are just praising Him, in communion, you receive from Him. Just praying to pray can be a definition of religion.
Expectations from people will always let you down, or hold you back from really receiving what God wants you to have. Look to God in expectation and you won’t be disappointed, ever!
Look at large family ‘get togethers’. Everyone is expecting to have a great time. They are going to be with their loved ones. What could go wrong? At best everyone is kind of shocked and saddened by how quickly it was over. For many, they are disappointed. Slights, disapproving glances, innuendos or flat out gossip killed the expected joy and pleasure.
When you have a ‘get together’ with the ‘least of these’, you will never be disappointed because you have no expectations. You are doing it with the expectation that God will be pleased, nothing more. Just an outpouring of God’s love from you to them. The Jesus style.
I prefer to not expect much from man. I generally love all ‘get togethers’. With my family of ‘the least of these’ however, it’s always the best outcome.
I think we all would be happier if we look at everyone as ‘the least of these’. That way when we get together there will be no false expectations.
Only look to God, and get togethers with Him, with great expectations. Man, (family or not) will always let you down in one way or another.
Jeremiah 17:5 Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man.
God never will disappoint you.
Jeremiah 17:7 Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.
