• Psalm 42:5
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God!!!!! for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
Simply reading, it says to me that ‘inquietud’ is in my soul. (Merely sayin that your soul isn’t quiet). Lots of versions say ‘soul, why are you troubled?’ I am troubled when I get the wrong change or one of our people we minister to are misbehaving. I am troubled when I have an un- Christ Like attitude about something.
Here ‘disquieted’ conveys the idea of being weighed down by something and succumbing to the pressure. It might even mean sin is in your life. The words “disquieted” can also mean to growl or rage, suggesting warfare within the soul.
The psalmist’s memory of joyful worship quickly turns to sorrow and then to hope again, showing that believers will experience inner turmoil.
Remember, whenever you read a Psalm, look for Jesus in there. He’s in every Psalm.
Jesus was lovable, relaxed and quiet for 33 years. Jesus’ soul was ‘disquieted’ from the time of the last supper / Gethsemane to His victorious rendering of His Own Soul to go to our Heavenly Father, taking our sins.
We know He had the quiet hope and peace before His Ultimate Sacrifice and resurrection. Then He looked up, His quiet soul was ‘disquieted’ a nano second in comparison with eternity.
He is foreshadowing by His crucifixion, our cancer, marital, financial problems. He’s foreshadowing our macht nichts little problems, disappointments and trouble.
He wants us to just be still and it will pass.
Oswald Chambers says ‘when you’re getting beaten up, don’t talk!’
“Be still and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10
This is God talking to you!
I have a pastor friend looking to further his part time college studies, and is finding it difficult to be accepted. This guy has so much Jesus in Him that it is palatable. Satan is whispering to him that he is unworthy. Today He is disquieted. Despondent. Feeling like a failure. I am shocked, I really look up to Him, he is MY encourager. I, fortunately, am feeling a LITTLE less unworthy today, so I was able to encourage him in the Word for once.
We all feel that way sometimes. If you say you don’t ever feel that way, you are not realistic. Even Jesus had those times.
Another pastor friend of mine wrote on facebook today that he is asking God to die. (‘When in the dark, shut up!!!’ As Ozzie said)
Another pastor friend calls me about 4 times a year wanting to commit suicide.
So what do you do about true spiritual, ‘disquieting’ of the soul?
I am a recent convert to accepting the power of the spoken Word. Until you figure out that what you say really and truly matters, I think your walk of faith will be frustrating to say the least.
Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Speaking the Word positively* and with mindfulness (Which the VA and my friend Marc Ivanchak both are teaching me.)
My suicidal pastor friend has stopped calling me because I told him to avoid some extremely ‘deadly’ poison speakers.
He is mentally unstable, and if someone continuously spits poison in his ear, it can literally kill him. Life and death.
My ‘disquieted’ soul moments are unbearable. I called another pastor friend and told him my soul was disquieted. He said to ‘stand in front of the mirror and say with authority to yourself’ ‘
• Psalm 42:5
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted in me? Hope thou in God!!!!! for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
I laughed it off . ‘ Word of Faith guy, God bless him’ I said. An hour later, I was worse than ever. So I went to a reflective mirror window on my balcony where no one would laugh at me and I did it.
It has Worked then, and has done so ever since! It’s my secret sauce. Hopefully my buddy applies it today!
It puts me in the ‘moment’. Not kicking myself for my past. Not worrying about the future. I was right here, right then. Telling myself physically and visually to get myself back into the game and my head out of my rear.
Saying my soul was troubled was not being honest. I was devastated. Don’t be subtle with yourself. My accountant, a typical Nica, puts things as delicately as possible. Often times I don’t even suspect there’s a problem until it becomes a raging festering shanker sore on the tip of my nose.
I said once ‘stop pussyfooting around, tell me straight up! There’s nothing you can tell me delicately that I’ll hear. Be BRUTALLY HONEST! I have to be all ears’.
Same thing with the bad translations of ‘soul why are you troubled?’ I read it a million times. ‘Troubled’ like saying it is is a boo boo. Disquieted, as I pondered it, is like saying that there is a possible need for amputation. There could be sin in the camp. Maybe your soul is telling you to cut it off!
Matthew 5:29–30 says, “And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell”
When your soul is disquieted, Pay Attention!! Be All ears!
You see, I used to ‘preach’ against the Word of Faith guys, most of whom btw have a far better walk with God and among men than I do.
I also used to preach against mindfulness and being ‘in the moment’. I called them moonies. Now when I find myself in the life and death struggle of ‘disquietness of my soul’ and the first thing I ask myself is ‘am I in the moment?’
NEVER WHEN MY SOUL IS DISQUIETED AM I ‘IN THE MOMENT’. Paul was the first, most famous and most read ‘mindfulness coach’ in the history of the world. He taught more people than anyone else about being in the moment! Want to prevent a SERIOUS disquieting of the soul. Listen to Paul!
Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before
14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Then ask God, ‘are we good? Is there anything in me that I need to do or stop doing??
Love ya
