 Psalm 127:3
New Living Translation
Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.

I dreaded having kids.  Then I married Winnie and we had two, Winnie Joy who is 11 and Dean Jr. who is 15. They are the best things that happened to me in my entire life.  They were a gift, that I didn’t even know I needed.  They changed my life, and deepened my relationship and love for God.

Our kids are a gift from God.  The reason I dreaded having them was the huge responsibility and worry that I knew would come with fatherhood.  What I dreaded soon became a reality.  I find myself stressing out at the responsibility and thefinancial stuff.  Kids are a great gift, but they are also very expensive to maintain. Yet, as the Bible says, all the angst I have is unfounded.  I have never in my life seen thechildren of righteous men begging for food.  We, *I*, beg for food for other people’s children, but never for my own.

Psalm 37:25
New Living Translation
Once I was young, and now I am old. Yet I have never seen the godly abandoned or their children begging for bread.

I also find myself worrying about my children walking away from the Lord.  Everyone fears our kids turning out wrong.  When we worry, we focus on our own desires for them and forget that their ultimate success is also a gift from God.  Our job is to point them to the Lord by living a Godly life.  The rest is in His hands.

 Proverbs 22:6
New Living Translation
Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.

Anyone who thinks that only through their personal efforts their kids will become successful adults, is delusional.  Some of the worst kids I know have the best of parents.  We’ve all heard stories of the missionary kids and preacher kids.  Some ofthe best kids I know have terrible parents.  We as parents blow it.  We as parents then repent of blowing it, only to blow it again.  It sends a confusing signal to our children.  We mean well but we are just lumps of clay in the Master’s hands.  It’s allHis work, and to Him be all the honor and glory.  (As a side note, pastors and missionaries, take heart!  Usually, after taking a beating from the world, most prodigal children come home eventually to the truth.)

God has no grandchildren.  Every person has to come to the Lord alone, one on one.

The sooner that we understand that the Lord is doing His perfect will in our lives, and our children’s lives, the sooner we can relax and appreciate our children even more.  I guarantee you, our kids will like that change too!

Our kids are our delight.  They are God’s delight as well.

Our ‘kids’ can be any kids that we know or adopted children.  I think when you invest in someone, they become your kid.  I have homeless people that I love and help.  Some are even older than me, but I look at them as my kids.  When you are taking responsibility of someone, helping them, loving them, they are like one of your kids, and you can delight in them as well.  Here’s a picture of me and ‘Pajarito’.  He has been homeless as long as I have known him.  I have been trying to help him for the past 3 decades.  I think he just might outlast me!

We as Christians should have spiritual children as well as physical children.  A spiritual child is one who follows us as we follow the Lord.  Like our physical children, we blow it with them too.  As with our physical children we need to leave the outcome in God’s hands and Trust God with their outcome as well.

PS.  Here is a video of one of my ‘spiritual children’ Pastor Astrubal Delgado.  He is my delight as well.
