Pay Day

Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life

PAY-DAY for an employer is usually a big stress for the boss and a great relief for the workers.   Many a night I woke up Winnie saying ‘we can’t make pay-roll tomorrow!!’  (We have 10 employees which is a ministry in itself,  because they are mostly sole providers for their extended families, and they live paycheck to paycheck.)    God has always provided though, and I get to pay people, which I love doing.  But workers love absolutely everything about payday.  I only love it when I actually have the money to pay them.  It’s what they work for.   But this article is about another payday that won’t be so happy for many.

2 weeks ago we learned that all have sinned.   I also taught this same thing to the PureHeartChildren’sFund’s kids.   When I told them that I was a sinner, they all laughed. They already knew.   When I told them that Winnie was a sinner as well, they were all shocked into silence!   Except for Jesus, every single human being has sinned, including me! We all blow it daily.   If someone says they don’t sin, they’re lying, which is a sin.  At least the last last time I checked it was.   If someone dies without accepting Jesus Christ as their Saviour they go to hell.   I don’t know abou you but that is a very scary thought!

Roman’s 3:23  For all have sinned and have come short of the glory of God.

All of us are dirty rotten sinners.   Sorry for breaking it to you that way but sinning is a capital offense.   The 10 Commandments were thundered down by God Himself from Mt. Sinai.  It wasn’t the private Jewish laws like Moises handed down.   These laws (the 10 commandments) were announced loudly and clearly to the whole world.   A convict on death row and the cute little 13 year old girl getting straight A’s in school both have sinned, and both deserve to go to the same hell. Coveting is the same as murder.   The sentence is the same.  Eternal death (hell).  We all deserve to die for our sins.   Anyone who says ‘I just want what I deserve’ really doesn’t know what they are saying;   What we have earned after toiling all of our lives is hell.   Just like if you work all day for a salary, you get paid at the end of the day.  If we work for 80 years, at the end of our lives we get paid.  We all  deserve to go to hell at the end of our lives simply because all of us have sinned.  All of us are born in sin.  Have you ever seen a baby?   The poet/philosopher Rumi says babies are little angels, sprouting little wings.   I don’t think Rumi has ever had a baby.   They’re screaming, angry and demanding.   Cute, but born with a sin nature.   Under the curse of Adam and Eve. Fact is, all of us are guilty, and deserve of the wages of sin.  Payday!

Romans 6:23a The wages of sin is death…..

Sounds horrible doesn’t it?  God doesn’t leave us hanging though. There is  good news in the same verse, as you’ll soon see.  It’s great news actually.  It’s called the Gospel! (Translated GoodNews).  If someone tells you about the Gospel and doesn’t mentioned the enormous blessings that come with it, they are doing you a great disservice.  Jesus came to die for our sins in place of us.   He also came to give us abundant life. Jesus had to be spotless.   He is the only one who kept all the commandments.  He is the only one who doesn’t deserve to die for His own sins because He didn’t have any! Jesus wants to whipe our slate clean and get us into heaven with Him to rule forever.  His death on the cross and resurrection made us spotless.  All we have to do is believe on Him (Trust His finished work) and confess Him to others.  That’s called being saved or ‘born-again’.   People ask me with disdain all the time ‘you’re not one of those ‘born-againers are you??’  My answer is always a positive ‘I SURE HOPE SO!’.

Romans 6:23b….. but the gift of God is eternal life

If we believe that Jesus died for us and that is the only reason we are going to heaven, we are in great shape!  We believed the Gospel.   If we try to add our going to church, Bible studies, religious works, not sinning, Sunday School attendance, ringing the Salvation Army Bell etc to our reason to go to heaven, we are on dangerous ground spiritually.   Jesus’ finished work on the cross only will save us.   Our faith alone pleases God, not our works.

God’s Word says that we are saved by grace through faith in Christ Jesus and not by our own efforts or works (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Sure,  as a born again Christian, I am an extremely hard worker.  I love knowing the Word of God and teaching it.   I love protecting innocent children from being sold into prostitution.  I love sharing the Gospel with bums.  I love giving (when I can), feeding the hungry, helping with clothes, medicine and shelter.
I love doing all of that, but it’s a bi-product of being saved.   The Gospel is a blessing in many ways.   I try not to sin.  I try to be honest.  My marriage is good.  I don’t hold grudges.  I forgive quickly.  I live in the present.  I am stronger and healthier than most people my age.   If I were stuck in a VA home with tubes hanging out of me, and surrounded by a bunch of grouches, being forced to wear a mask, etc that wouldn’t be a blessing.   The fact that I am still able to freely work hard for Jesus is a blessing.  I have more than enough so that I can bless others, and free to do so is great as well.   If I were sickly and weak and had to work a third job, just to barely survive, I wouldn’t be able to help others.  But I can help others. That is a huge blessing.   God doesn’t just want us to go to heaven.  He wants us to have heaven on earth as well.

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
