Peace

(Español abajo)

John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Peace by worldly definition means no war or problems.  It is a very cheap peace, that creates superficial and shallow people.  This kind of peace depends completely on circumstance and chance.

Do not long for this type of peace, an absence of problems and war… it is fickle, and will let you down. This type of peace does not nurture.

As Christians we are to long for the kind of peace that only Jesus can give, even when there are problems.

Those of us who live in Nicaragua are in a very perilous and unstable situation right now.  We are kind of used to it though.  Winnie and I have peace because we are where Jesus wants us to be.  Our peace does not come from theconditions around us, only from being in God’s will.

Problems come and go down here.  Civil unrest, power outages, water shortages, droughts, earthquakes, tidal waves etc. the list goes on and on.  I think God permits this country to go through so much because He knows theNicaraguan people can handle it.  We go days without internet, cable, electricity and water.  Although it’s not pleasant it is totally manageable.

Jesus not only saves us but He gives us a different kind of peace, that only comes when you are following Him.  The Greek translation for this type of peace is eiréné εἰρήνη, Phonetics (i-ray’-nay)

Jesus said in John 14:27:
Peace (eiréné) I leave with you; my peace (eiréné)  I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

This ‘eiréné’ peace Jesus talks about is a peace that surpasses all logic, peace in the middle of the storm.  Jesus gives you eternal life after the storm and eiréné peace in the middle of it.

Jesus is with us in the storms of life once we accept Him into our hearts, just like He was with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the furnace.  Remember when King Nebuchadnezzar tried to burn them alive because they refused worshipping his statue in order to continue to worship the one and only living God?

Daniel 3:23 ‘Nebuchadnezzar’ had these three men, firmly tied, ‘and threw them’ into the blazing furnace.

24 Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?”

They replied, “Certainly, Your Majesty.”

25 He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.”

I will bet that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego had a lot of peace once they saw that Jesus was with them in the stormy, firey, HOT furnace.  I bet they also had a lot of joy.  Peace and Joy go hand in hand.

The definition of Peace is Joy dancing around in your heart.  No peace, no joy.  And visa versa.  All dependent on Jesus.  Know Jesus, Know Peace, No Jesus, No Peace.

Peace ‘eiréné’ makes you more like Jesus, and makes following Him more attractive to non believers.

Another benefit/definition of Jesus’ peace is Rest and Completeness.  You don’t have to struggle anymore, the victory has been won.  Our only concern now is for OTHERS!

Jesus said in Matthew 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Paz

Juan 14:27
